NVC just says no

City rejects
NVD overture
to combine

NORTH Vancouver
City council members
faced their District
counterparts last
Thursday night and
emphatically said. no to
amalgamation.

“What advantage is it for the
city? We work togeshier now

and it’s working well. We like
our community the way it is,”

said Coun. Barbara Perrault, of

North Vancouver City.

Ciry council members
unanimously refused to help
pay for 2 proposed task force
to look into North Vancouver
amalgamation.

North Vancouver District
Coun. Ernie Crist proposed
setting up the task force last
November,

He remains undeterred by
the city’s solid rejection of the
task force or any steps towards
amalgamation.

“It is my opinion that our
su- called joint services are not
efficient because they have to
answer to two masters and
keep two separate books,”
said Crist.

“It’s become a nightmare
.. If we want to do something
we always have to check with

the city,” said Crist.

The mo North Vancou-
vers have dramatic demo-
graphic differences, but share
police, secreation and arts
programs,

“Ic is my opinion thar the
district taxpayers are subsidiz -
ing the city,” said Crist.

Bur North Vancouver
District Coun. Janice Harris
disagrees with her council col-
league.

“It is my understanding
that we have had a very equi-
table sharing of services,” said
Harris.

Harris added that she was
not in favor of looking into
amalgamation without North
Vancouver City on side.

Crist didn’t know how

much the study would cost
district taxpayers.

Meanwhile Perrault said
that she was aware of no resi-
dent living in the city in favor
of amalgamation.

She said that all North
Vanceuver residents who pay
property tax know whether
they five in the city or district.
