A total of 15,453 hous- ing units were started in Metropolitan Vancouver during 1996, which was an increase of three per- cent over the level start- ed in 1995 (14,992 units), according to fig- ures released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). However, the figures show that while starts of multiple unit dwellings declined by one percent, single family housing starts rose 12%. “The small decline in con- dominium starts is due mainly ‘to the large supply of unsold units which has caused some builders to hold off from start- ing new projects.
