Dear Editor:

Now that North Vancouver City Council
has moved to hold the referendum for the
upgrading of Mahon Park with a new running
track and field athletic facilities, I find it neces-
sary to write ta voice my Opposition to this
expenditure of $2 million.

My reasons are not the so-called NIMBY
syndrome. Quite the contrary. I live in close
proximity to Mahon Park and have always
enjoyed seeing the park so well utilized by all
of our citizens.

There are those who play softball and soc-
cer in season, jog the track or just walk around
the track for exercise. It is used from early a.m.
to late night every day rain or shine by young
and old. The annual Hose and Reel Festival,
dog and vintage car shows are also held each
year,

This is all done without harming the park. I
am certainly not against the mum and apple pie

issues, such as sport and physical fitness.

However, | feel that the installation of such
a specialized facility would severely limit usage
to a few track meets a year and preclude most
other activities. Mahon Park would be severely
under-utilized.

Some form of fencing would be necessary
to prevent vandalism and protect such an
expensive investment. Those who enjoy the
park now will find themselves on the outside
looking in.

There are many worthy uses of the public
tax dollar bur I don’t view this as one of them.
In a heavily taxed society such as ours, J am
certain that our existing tax base can be used to
support projects with a much broader appeal
without taxing us further. :

1 would urge a No vote to this referendum
on election day. ~ . .
