~ 28 — Friday, October 21, 1994 - North Shore News Cleaner lines for latest Mercedes From page 23 output. In the rear, the trunk lid has been rounded off, the taillights are new, and there's a prominent reflector strip across the rear just above the bumper. The $320 wheelbase has increased by !0 cm (3.9 in.) to 3,140 mm (123.6 in.). Rear legroom is now abundant rather than generous, and the ride is even more luxurious than before. In fact, the ride is rather soft by European standards, with more body lean and roll than you might expect. The emphasis is on luxury rather than performance and handling. The $320’s 228 horsepower 3.2- litre inline six-cylinder engine is a masterpiece of engineering and motoring civility. With dual over- head camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and variable valve-timing, this high-revving powerplant is wonderfully smooth and quiet while cruising, yet offers sporty performance when pressed. However, with a curb weight of more than 2,100 kg (4,700 tbs), the $320 doesn’t offer the effortless power and torque of the $420 or $500 — 228 horsepower and 315 ft-lbs of torque is enough for a big car like this, but not an excess. Fortunately, both performance and fuel economy have been enhanced by a new five-speed aute- matic transmission, available only on the $320. The five-speed tranny improves off-the-line responsive- ness and mid-range acceleration. Fifth gear, an overdrive gear, reduces engine speed by 15% and fuel economy has been improved by 10%, averaging 11.4 1/100 km (26 m.p.g.). Vehicle speed-sensitive steering provides adequate stiffness at speeds over 20 km-h (13 m.p.h.), but it is very light, almost too light, at parking lot speeds. Four wheel disc brakes with ABS offer superb stopping power for 2 car of this size and weight. A traction control system helps reduce wheelspin on slippery sur- faces by temporarily applying the brakes to the spinning drive wheel, and if necessary, retarding the throttle. The interior of the new $320 is luxurivus, attractive, and spacious enough for five adults. A tasteful blend of light and dark shades, pol- ished bur] walnut trim, and chromed door handles is a refresh- ing contrast to the monotone interi- ors of some luxury cars. The $320 revised analogue instrument cluster now includes an electronic LCD odometer and trip counter. Standard equipment on the $320 is extensive, almost too much to list here. Here’s a partial list: !2-way power front seats with three-memo- ry setting which includes the posi- tion of the telescopic/tilt steering wheel, headrest and rearview mir- rors; dual automatic temperature control; top-notch leather uphol- stery; Bose Beta sound system; anti-theft alarm; prewiring for a CD changer and cellular phone; four wheel disc brakes with a four chan- ° nel ABS system; 16-inch alloy wheels and power-operated win- dows, headrests, and door locks. Some of the more unusual fea- tures on the $320 include double- glazed side windows to keep out traffic noise; an activated charcoal filter in the ventilation system; fold-down rear headrests, and a lift- handle that automatically pops out of the trunk when it is opened. §-Class sedans have an excel- lent record for crash safety. All offer a rigid passenger compart- ment safety cell with energy- absorbing deformation zones at the front and rear. In particular, front frame members are designed to deflect crash energy away from the passenger compartment in a colli- sion. Even the brake pedal and parking brake are designed to swiv- el out of the way in a serious colli- sion. Inside, there are dual airbags, knee bolsters, a padded dashboard, and a collapsible steering wheel. In terms of luxury, safety, pres- tige, and quality, the S320 ranks as one of the finest luxury sedans in the world.
