TERRORISM PAYS. Terrorists are listened to. And their political represen- tatives speak at Vancouver Hoard of Trade dinners at which people pay $60 a head. } refer, of course, to Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, blarney expert and phoney peace-propagan- dist whom some people are putting forward for the Nobel Peace Prize, if you can believe it. If Genghis Kahn and Tamerlaine were still around they might make good candidates, too, Adams is an evil man. He repre- sents neither Ireland nor the Irish. The Republic of Ireland recognized neither him nor Sinn Fein until a few weeks ago, when he suddenty decided the armed funatics for whom he speaks weren't winning their 25-year campaign of killing and that a new tactic was called for. He doesn’t represent Northern Ireland, either. Nor does Sinn Fein. According to the British press, it commands no more than 2% of the northern vote. While I was in the U.K. recent- ly, John Major said he would be quite willing to hand over Ulster to the people of that benighted province, or to Sinn Fein, or even to Ireland — provided they voted for that by referendum. Knowing he would stand no chance, Adams ran for cover. As for the IRA, mili- tary analyst John Keegan says that the highest estimate of trained IRA strength is 500, but that it might be no more than 125. They live ina democratic ¢ state but — unlike Canadian separatists "— have never stood for election. American authorities such as the CIA and the FBI recommended that Adams not be allowed on Arnerican . soil. But Slick Willie Clinton over- ruled them in an attempt to get the Irish vote in the upcoming elec- tions. Principle doesn’t come into it. Politicians will shake hands with the devil for a vote. Adams’ “peace” cali is even more phoney than Hitler's was in 1939, or Stalin's when he was APILANO THE BETTER PRICES MALL E Doug Coilins ON THE OTHER HAND occupying half of Europe and his minions in the West were on their “ban-the bomb” kick — meaning ban OUR bomb. His speeches — including the one to the Board of Trade gullibles ~~ are meaningiess as far as “peace” is concerned, If he wants peace he can have it. All he has to do is to tell the IRA to drop its weapons and take to the bailot box. 66 Principle doesn’t come into it. Politicians will shake hands with the devil for a vote. 99 Instead, he refuses to say that the cease-fire is permanent and other forms to terrorism continue. Whether they all came to Vancouver I don’t know, but here is a partial list of persons who accom- panied Adams on his U.S. tour, as carried in the Daily Mail. &R Terence Clarke, convicted for his part in the brutal slaying of two British Army corporals who in front of TV cameras were dragged from a car and murdered after being caught up in an IRA funeral in Belfast. Clarke got seven years, but was released a couple of years ago. He's one of Adams‘ bodyguards, Rita O'Hare, wanted by the Royat Irish Constabulary for the attempted murder of a British Army officer; jailed for three years in 1975 in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, for smuggling explosives into a high-security prison. @ Richard McAuiey, jailed for {0 years for a bomb explosion in Belfast. He sat next to Adams on the flight to the U.S. and according to the Mail is one of the Sinn Fein leader’s closest aides. 8 Aidan McAteer, jailed for (2 years for a bomb and gun attack on an Army post in Belfast. @ Francis Gildernew, jailed for [2 years on explosives charges; now runs a barin New York. & James McCarthy, another body- guard. Convicted in 1977 for pos- Sessing weapons, [tis amazing that these thugs have been allowed to perambulate around any civilized country. And Adams’ claims that peace has bro- ken out are False. The shooting may have stopped, but terror and intimidation contin- ue, ] quote the Mail again, but the same sort of story was being carried in ali the British newspapers. “Critics are still being murdered or beates up, petty thieves have their arms and legs broken, joyriders have their knee-caps blown off, small busi- nessmen pay protection money.” All of which is part of the IRA plan to “persuade™ people that they are the law, not the law. “In the past few weeks,” reported the newspaper, “offenders against the IRA notions of right and wrong have been sav- agely assaulted, though — as a ges- ture to the ceasefire — with iron bars and baseball bats rather than guns.” Only a few days ago the Globe & Mail reported that a 16-year-old boy had every bone in his legs bro- ken. In spite of everything, the IRA hasn't been able to win the war. Hence the “peace” gambit. But ter- rorism does pay. It gets donations from the simple-minded and Board of Trade dinners in Vancouver.
