Family of rescued
man gives thanks

Dear Editor:

The Rogers family in North Vancouver have reason to be extremely
grateful to a number of people for the professional and supportive way in
which they helped us when John Senior went missing on Gambier Island
on Aug. 6 and 7, fora very long 28 hours.

Our thanks and appreciation to: Search and Rescue — Sunshine Coast
and Auxiliary, Lion’s Bay, Lionsgate; North Shore Life Boat Society and
Deep Cove Life Boat Society; Coast Guard -- Sunshine Coust Auviliary
and Fisherman's Cove Auxiliary; Coast Guard Hovercraft; RCMP ---
Gibson's detachment (special thanks to Sgt. Rick Sargent from Pat Rogers,
for exceptional support), RCMP helicopter and dog master. ROMP vessel
Regina.

To the people who helped as friends: Bruce and Allison. James and
Bryce Munvo of the Horseshoe Bay Boat Centre, Malcolm of Sewell’s
Marina and Boat Rental in Horseshoe Bay, Seon Ruddy of the Auxiliary
Life Boat Society, Deep Cove; and to the many people who offered assis-
tance as things became more desperate late Sunday afternoon,

What really impressed us, | guess. were the number of people who
> worked as volunteers and who do so on a regular basis, giving up their free
time to help ‘those of us in need,

1am writing to convey how
incredibly insensitive and inappro-
priate I felt it was for you to pub-
lish a photograph of a woman in
obvious shock and crisis on the
front page of your newspaper July
29, when it was evident from the
story that this individual wished to
have her identity remain confiden-

Surely the intended message and
concern for public safety could
have been communicated while
respecting the individual's need
and right for privacy atsuch a time
of loss and grief.

It is my belief that a formal
apology is warranted.
