2- Sunday, duty 3, 1994 - North Shore News N. Van diving suits sold to navy NORTH VANCOUVER’S Hard Suits Inc. has enlisted the U.S. navy as a major client for its patented Newtsuit systern. By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter - * The company will seJ] one Newtsuit to the navy for $1 mil- lion, Its contract gives the navy an option to purchase an addi- tional $2.6 million in products: and services over the next year. ' “We waited a long time for this,” said chairman and CEO Phil Nuytten. It took the people at Hard Suits more than five years to convince the American navy of the Newtsuit’s usefulness. _ “Phe. U.S. navy is a very stringent customer,” Nuyttenr continued. “So for them to say, ‘Yes,- tight,. we accept the Newtsuit,” that’s a tremendous step forward for us.” Terry Thompson, Hard Suits’.North American repre- sentative for marketing and sales, likens the Newtsuit to “a submarine with arms and legs,” whose special advantage is that it does not subject a diver to water pressure or the rigors of decompression. The U.S. navy plans to use. the suit for submarine rescue. — The technology for such suits has. been evolving for years, but Hard Suits Inc. is the sole source of this particular product worldwide. The Newt- suit.is equipped with a patented joint which other companies have beea unable te. replicate. The Italian and French navies have already purchased -one Newtsuit each. _ The Canadian navy bought two Newtsuits early on in their development, but at that time they were not equipped. with a “thruster pack” which has improved the suits’ usefulness. The current contract is not a huge one by Hard Suits’ stan- dards. “But it could add a great deal of maturity to the company,” said Thompson. ° Buy now & save! 4’ Corsair, deluxe’ oplenent package Was $56,200 Now $54,909 | 32’ Travelalre Executive Coach Was $98,700 Now $89,900 [NORTH s SHORE'S RV.
