surprise), Charlie meets Came
(Andie MacDowall), a visiting
American. She’s bright, articulate
and if she wasn’t winging back
home the next day, she would
have been “the one” instead of
“the one who got away.”

soul-mates keep bumping into

each other wedding after wed-
ding. While scriptwriter Richard
Curtis throws some predictable
stumbling blocks into their path,
the well-written characters make
this movie substantial.

The man who plays Charlie’s
brother, David (David Bower) —
deaf in real life — is blended into
the story naturally, giving us
some terrific one-signers. And
comedian Rowan Atkinson (Mr.
Bean, Black Adder) has the
biggest laughs as an extremely
nervous priest.

The star, of course, is Hugh
Grant who heads up the amiable
cast. The prolific actor, currently
in two other movies, Sirens and
Bitter Moon, has enormous
charisma and a firm handle on
light comedy. He could be
Britain’s answer to Tom Hanks.
Although she has the less colorful
straightwoman role, Andie
MacDowall generates just
enough warmth and charm.

Don’t wait for an invitation—
Four Weddings and a Funeral
may not break any new
