Over the banquet toasts to U.S.-Russian friendship the Cold War seemed like a distant _ nightmare now hard to remember. That was just before more North Americans heard for the first time of Vladimir Zhitinovsky, the Liberal Democrat big winner in the recent Russian parliamen- tary elections. lt won’t be the last time. “Liberal Democrat’’ is a ‘soothing camouflage for what Zhirinovsky and his party — who came almost from nowhere only a few months ago — really are: sabre-rattling, extreme - right ultra-nationalists. Their charismatic 47-year-old leader vows to reunite all the former Soviet Republics into a single nation and has threatened to use nuclear weapons against . any country that messes with the new “‘Greater Russia.”’ Among other promises, he would: @ Cancel and stop repaying all debts run up by the Soviet Union; @ Cut off foreign aid to all . countries except Serbia and Iraq; @ Slow down the withdrawal of Russian troops still in eastern Europe, the Baltics and other former Soviet Republics; @ End crime and corruption with tough punishment for offenders. The anti-semitic, neo-fascist Zhirinovsky also says he'll bring economic well-being to every Russian citizen. And significantly, he’s wooing the army by promis- ing an apartment to every homneless officer. His appeal to the weary Russian population, battered by Yeltsin’s drive to establish a free market economy at whatever temporary cost in individual hardship, has won a commanding lead for the Liberal Democrats over the Yeltsin reformers in the Russian parlia- ment. The latter still hold one impor- tant trump. In the same elections a referendum endorsed Yeltsin’s new Russian Constitution, which bolsters the president’s powers at the expense of the legislature. ———— Wright HITHER AND YON parliamentary opposition, the last time earlier this year with tanks « and 141 deaths.. . Now that his reformers i in the Duma are squeezed between the neo-fascists and the anti-reform Communists, a new challenge may soon arise. If it comes, will the . army, already being strongly courted by the neo-fascists, again back the president?» ~ Even with the remarkable Boris : Yeltsin in charge, Russia — its nuclear arsenal still mostly in place — is far from being a fun place to contemplate. The sudden - emergence of Vladimir Zhirinov- sky, a potential Russian Adolf Hitler, makes it even less fun.
