BUSINESS Eco-friendly laser printer cartridges WHEN JIM Chow looks at the cartridge from a laser on Business Show in Vancouver, printer, he sees an environmental problem that’s bigger than Toronto’s world-famous CN Tower. “Each year countless numbers of used toner cartridges from computer laser printers are thrown into landfills in Canada,"’ he said. “If you stacked them up, they’d go higher than the CN Tower.” Chow’s home-based company in North Vancouver, Mega Toner Cartridges, recycles laser-printer cartridges and toner cartridges from fax machines and personal copiers. His company will pick up a car- tridge from an office or home, replace the cartridge drum or other components if necessary, re-fill the cartridge with graphi- cs-grade toner, and deliver it back. Chow said he estimates that less than 10 per cent of companies in B.C. are recycling their toner car- tridges. “It is primarily the larger com- panies and universities that are doing this because they realize that large cost savings can be made. “More people are starting to recycle their toner cartridges, but I think it has a lot to do with saving money. People may he concerned about the environment, but saving money is something you can real- ize in the short-term.
