THE CYPRESS Park All-Star baseball team fielded a strong per-.

formance at the B.C. Littie League Championships in Parksville
last week.

This is only Gie second time Cypress Park has sent out a team to
the provincial championships since the league was formed in 1962.

““There’s only been one other team from Cypress Park to go to

-the provincial playoffs and that was in 1974, so they did very
weli,’’ said coach Jim Poyser.

Cypress Park earned a berth in the provincials by winning an
earlier tournament which established the team as the repre-
sentatives of district five, a zone which stretches {7am Squamish to
Deep Cove.

Cypress Park was knocked out of the week-long tournament in
fifth spot, with a 2-2 record.

They twice downed the Oceanside team from Parksville, posting
16-2 and 9-6 scores.

Beaver Vsiley from Trail defeated Cypress Park 6-3 as did Vic-
toria Drive from Vancouver 6-2.

“We could have gone further with our pitchers and skills,”
Poyner said, pointing to a few unlucky breaks.

Solid pitching for Cypress Park was provided by Sam Poyner
and Tim Engelbert. Short-stop Craig Petrie made some key hits in
both tournaments, Poyner said.

Connell down
but not out

NORTH VANCOUVER'S Grant Connell advanced to the third
round of the U.S. Volvo International in Vermont where he was
defeated by Glenn Lavendeck, U.S., 7-5, 7-6.

But the big rews is that Connel! eliminated the No. 5 seed Amos
Mansdorf of Israel, 6-3, 7-6(7-2), to get there.

Team B.C.
destroys Mexico

IN THE second soccer game of the Denver Classic Cup, the North
Shore-based Team B.C. posted a convincing 4-1 win over the Mex-
ican ITAM team.

Also known as the under-20 All-Star team, Team B.C. is touring
the U.S. in preparation for the Canada Games which start August
13 in Saskatoon.

North Vancouver captain Eamon Ward led the scoring wilh two
goals in the first half.

Markus Felderer, also from North Vancouver, followed Ward's
tead by neiting two goals in the second half,

Russel! Collins can claim all four assists.

This game follows a first round victory of 3-1 by Team B.C. over
Colorado’s ander-Z3 team.

Scoring for the 3.C. squad was Mark Watson from North Van-
ceuver, Surrey’s Rod Scheoni erid Scott Munsen from West Van-
couver.
