The school renaming is planned
to coincide with the tenth anniver-
sary celebration of the Programme
Cadre this coming spring,
Gagnon-Thomas told the board.

The board voted to return the
issue to the school renaming com-
mittee for further study.

Leclerc were the other two names
on the short list recently presented
for board consideration by the
North Star School naming com-
mittee.

Claudia Crosbie and Michelle
Gagnon-Thomas, in their pres-
entation to the board, said the
three names were the most popular
among 70 proposals submitted
during October by 27 children and
18 parents associated with the
French-language school.

But trustee Don Bell said the
district had a policy of not naming
schools after persons. Dorothy
Lynas and the late Dr. Carson
Graham were exceptions, Bell said,
because of the lifelong service they
had given to education in the
district.

Bell recommended the school
naming committee find a B.C.
name, preferably one with a North
Vancouver or other local refer-
ence.

In an impassioned speech to the
board, Huguette Cloutier said the
school should be named after Felix
Leclerc because he was ‘‘the first
French Canadian to make our ...
