[Implants are latest
in tooth technology

RECENT breakthroughs in
dental implant technology are
giving renewed bite to the
toothless.

Although quite new to Canada
and the United States, dental im-
plants have been successfully used
in Europe for years.

The latest technolog, addresses
the problems plaguing people who
have ill-fitting dentures due to
jawbone shrinkage, or who are
simply unable to wear dentures.

Despite a growing popular
awareness regarding the long-term
merits of regular tooth brushing
and flossing, over 20 million Ca-
nadians and Americans are com-
pletely toothless. And one of every
two adults is missing at least one
tooth.

Dental implants have been
around for almost 50 years, but
according to North Vancouver oral
surgeon Dr. Tony David, none
were backed by enough documen-
tation and clinical trial to ensure
ongcing success.

Over 80,000 dental implants
have been completed both in
Canada and the U.S. since 1984.
The Interpore IMZ_ system,
developed in the ‘70s in West
Germany and used by David and
his oral and maxillofacial surgical
associates, has been placed in ap-
proximately 20,000 European pa-
tients over the past 12 years.

Said David: ‘‘The patients love
it. It adds so much stability and
the track record has been great.’’

placement of small titanium
cylinders into the jawbone. The
cylinders eventually become fixed
in the bone and then act as ar-
tificial tooth roots or anchors for
false teeth, crowns or bridges.
Titanium is the metal of choice
because of its strength, low cost
and its favorable adaptability to
bone and soft tissue.

Added David: ‘‘The IMZ system
has a shock absorber in the centre
of the fixture to distribute the load
from the chewing forces rather
than to the implant and bone.’’

The implant system has, over the
past eight years, recorded a Euro-
pean success rate of 97 per cent for
lower jaw implants and a 98 per
cent success rate for upper jaw
implants.

But a drawback for some may
be the cost, which may range from
between $2,500 to $4,000 for an
uncomplicated procedure using a
minimum number of implants, to
over $15,000 for the maximum
number of implants and a full,
fixed bridge. Most dental in-
surance plans do not cover the cost
of implants.
