FEeSssure Cc YOUR CAR'’S cooling system is pressurized. Using the same prin- ciple as a pressure cooker, (which raises water’s boiling point above its normal 100°C, 212°F) an engine operates at temperatures of 121-135°C (250-275°F). Cooling system pressure, generally 97-117 kPa (14-17 P.S.1.) is controled by the radiator pressure cap. When this compo- nent cannot maintain correct pressure, the boiling point in- creases and the coolant begins to boil off. Hence, the engine overheats. Described as the safety valve of the system, il is one of the least expensive parts of a vehicle, says Car Care Council. But, with the loss of just one pound of pressure amounting to a 3° drop in boiling point, the pressure cap plays an important role in protecting the engine. Symptoms of failure can be in- sidious, often not surfacing until an inconvenient time or place when overheating occurs. The most common reasons for failure are the rubber seal and the pressure release valve. Ejiuher or both deteriorate with time, requir- ing reptacerent of the cap. Most service dealers charge little or nothing for checking a custom- er’s pressure cap. It takes but a few minutes and is a good preven- tative measure in the height of summer heat.
