a4 - Wednesday, May 20, 1987 - North Shore News ‘OUTSTANDING TREATMENT’ Local ambulance attendants great Dear Editor: I would like to use your widely- read newspaper to publicly thank two fantastic young men from the Provincial Ambulance Service for the outstanding treatment I receiv- ed after | had tripped on a loose mat in Save-On-Foods in North Vancouver and badly fractured my kneecap. Although I was very frightened and in a great deal of pain they somchow calmed me down by their genuine concern and words of en- couragement during the ride to the hospital. God bless you, whoever you are! Keep up your wonderful work! And if I may be allowed to offer some words of advice to the man- ager of that store, perhaps he would be wise to concentrate a lit- Ue less on ‘‘Save-On-Foods”’ and a litle more on ‘‘Save-On-Falls’’ by doing something constructive about those treacherous mats. Mrs, Sleeth does overlook one very important point however. It is very casy to teach some breeds to do what they have been bred to for hundreds of years. Teaching a Labrador to retrieve takes a day or two. It’s natural to the dog. Teaching a Shepherd to protect is easy. Teaching a Pit Bull to be vicious is equally easy. The dog is not at fault, it is always the human that is at fault. Having trained trial hunting dogs, I have noticed one thing. A dog seems tc mirror his master’s personality after a year or more of close company with the human. The human hides his inner nature, but the dog doesn’t. Think about it! My own Shepherd (who was badly beaten in his youth) | have managed to retrain to believe in humans and not fight other dogs. Almost any dog can be gentle and lovable if the owner really is likewise. License owners, not dogs. Put the responsibility where it truly belongs and do it with minimum fines. Good for you Olive Sleeth.
