GAYS AND STRAIGHTS ifference is reference Only sexual OPEN LETTER TO DOUG COLLINS Regarding your article on fags. Why is it you and so many pco- ple are shallow minded when it comes down to the gay communi- ty. When will people grow up and stop being so ignorant? When people get offensive when talking about the gay community, it is usually because they do not know anyone that is gay, or they are not sure as to their own prefer- ence. There is now more of an epidemic of AIDS in the straight community than the gay communi- ty. People do not take the time to gather the facts, instead they read bits and pieces of misleading in- formation they find in papers. er other places. Then they collect this informa- don and turn it into misconcep- tions they carry on to other people. We then have people who are scared to be, or breathe, in the same rooni as a gay person. The only difference between straight people and gay people is their sexual preference. So what! Leave them alone. People treat them like some horrible freaks that are different than the rest of socie- ty. NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE Retirement homes Dear Editor: In the United States we have seen some most attractive retire- ment communities designed for ac- tive adults and independent living, but afl were planned also for wheelchair access. They had large kitchens with low counters, Jarge bathrooms with grab bars so a wheelchair confined person could also function well. There were facilities for swimm- ing (including a hoist for wheelchair users), tennis, gym and all kinds of leisure activities for less active retirees. AH are financially most sue- cessful. Rossmoor in the S.F. Bay Area (Walnut Creek) and one in Laguna Hills, Southern California, both have thousands of active couples enjoying their retirement. Are greater Vancouver real estate developers tapping this great potential market of active retirees sull living in their original family home, now much too large for their needs? When moving they would be Jooking for a place to suit their present active life, but somewhere that would be well designed for wheelchair use for possible Future need, or for a spouse now confined Write on, Doug! Dear Editor: Thank goodness, one of your writers finally got it straight regar- ding the South Moresby issue. A pat on the back to Doug Col- lins for exposing some facts and putting the matter into its true perspective. Yes Doug, you qualify as an ex- pert as much as the thousands who have signed petitions to ‘‘save’’ South Moresby; they have never been there cither. H.K. Williams Vancouver custom draperies by S. Who pave anyone the right in this society to downgrade these people. or any other person who has a. prefer- ence? Al the insults and ballyhoo in the world will not make you go away, so what makes you think the gay community ever will? Why was the Noyes case brought up as an example of gay activity? Why are you being paid for what you do? Written by a nongay person.
