It explains, for example, attendance requirements. the Block Parent Program, the Call Back Program, the Special Education Program, the time allowed for homework. (For Grades 4 to 7 it’s not more than 30 minutes, for Grades 8 to 10, not more than 60 minutes, and Grades 11 and 12, not more than 120 minutes. ) And finally. just where does the money for schools come from? It’s explained concisely tm the General Information Handbook. When does the school year start. when does it stop? What is the Core Curriculum? When are the West Van School Board meetings and where? How much homework is a child allowed to have under the Public Schools Act? The answers to these questions and many more are found in the General Information Handbook distributed recently by the West Vancouver School Board to every family with school age children in West Vancouver. Copies of this comprehen- sive, informational 32 page handbook giving an over- view of the services provided by the School District are also available to interested groups at the West Van Board Office, 1075 21st Street. Parents will find the handbook a_e valuable reference on a number of school-related topics. The role of the parent in today’s school system is explained. Parents will read that they are “encouraged to visit schools and keep informed of their children’s progress and activities.” School Board policy also encourages a school to have a parent group to act as an advisory committee to the administration and staff.
