Statistics aid business

IN PREPARING a
business plan for your
company, there’s one
gold mine of informa-
tion that you shouldn’t
overlook.

lt’s called the Statistics
Canada Advisory Service
library, and it is Jaden with
information from the na-
tional census, various mar-
ket surveys, trade bulletins
and magazines. It’s located
at 1145 Robson, and _ it’s
open between 8 a.m. and
4 p.m.

‘One of the first things
your business plan will re-
quire is an estimate of how
many potential customers
can be found in the im-
mediate area of your
_business location. Start with
the Canada census - even
though the most recent data
dates from 1981, it can give
you some very precise in-
formation.

‘The census can pinpoint
any given area on the North
Shore, which is divided into
enumeration areas of be-
tween 125 and 375
households each. The data
itself. is on microfiche.

The census can tell you the
occupation and levels of in-
come of the people in each

- area. It can also tell you

levels of . education, and.
whether the people work
‘within their own
neighborhood.

It gives specifics such as
the..ethnic and religious
background of people in the
area; the average number of
