So say three scientists with the kinesiology department at Simon Fraser University. Drs. Enc Banister, John Dickinson and John Wilkin- son, contend that Canadians are unwittingly slipping fur- ther and further into athletic mediocrity and that as our improvement slows, other nations are taking steps which promise to give them athletic superiority for decades to come. The controversial predic- tions are based on research into factors which determine whether an athletic system is likely to produce increasingly better or worse competitors; factors such as monetary in- vestment, number of sports facilities, participation rates and provisions made for the training of highly qualified coaches and elite athletes. FALLING DOWN “‘Tf international ex- cellence is our goal, Canada 1s faling down tn almost every category,’ says Banister. ‘*Superior athletic perfor- mance depends on adequate investment in sport facilities and the establishment of a national sports network that can quickly identify elite in- ‘dividuals who have the potential of becoming world class. And once the top athletes are identified, there must be financial resources and facilities available for them, and their coaches, to apply scientifically proven training techniques.’”’ Wilkinson agrees. ‘‘There iS no mystery why Eastern bloc countries do so well in international competition.
