Brad is just one of 25 mentally handicapped -athletes participating in the Special Olympic Roller skating programme held at the Stardust Skating Centers in North= Vancouver and Richmond. For the past year, volunteer staff and skaters have been working one on one with these special athletes to improve their basic roller skating skills. Although roller skating is a demonstration sport in the U.S. Special Olympic Games, the emphasis for the B.C. Special Olympic Roller Skating programme is fun, friendship and_= skill improvemment. The Special Olympic Roller Skating programme is run as a six week course. The next course begins Sun- day, April 10 from 6:15-7:15 pm. Athletes or volunteers wishing to participate at either location should pre- regaster with Mary Dale at 988-0222. The West Vancouver Parks and _ Recreation Department has the answer for you. Registration is now being accepted at the Recreation Centre for tennis lessons for all ages and all levels. Leading the instruction corps is Abdul Shaikh from the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. Certified by Tennis Canada as an Instructor Coach, Level III, Abdul has been providing his services to the municipal tennis program for many summers and has developed a strong following of players who look forward to his instruction each year. Supporting Abdul this year will be Kim Low who will handle evening lessons at the Recreation Centre courts and Mandy Parsons who will instruct all lessons provided at Neighborhood Court locations. Gymnastics champs Seycove secondary school came up with an 11th place finish in the overall girls and boys B.C. Gymnastics championships, held last week in Richmond. A total of 41 schools and 240 young gymnasts took part in the three day mect.
