Logging ‘copter crashes

THREE men in a boat
which smashed on to
shore at Bunsen Bay on
the south side of Indian
Arm Sunday morning
were taken to Lions
Gate Hospital by
firefighters from North
Vancouver.

As the boat slammed into
rocks, two of the men
aboard were hurled through
the windshield and a third
was crushed in the bulkhead
area by the impact.

A witness to the accident,
North Vancouver SPCA
shelter superintendent Tom
Van Guilder, said the
pleasure craft Calrossie, a
cruiser he estimated to be
32-36 ft., zig-zagged past him

the scene about five minutes

youth with back injuries
which had paralyzed him,
lying on the floor of the boat
which had a hole of about 30
inches torn into its bow.

Both his companions were
cut, he said, one bleeding
severely from a vein in the
neck and who had an ear
almost severed off.

Van Guilder said the boat
had hit the beach at a speed
he estimated of 15-20 knots,
he said: “There was an awful
lot of booze on board.”

The victim with the back
injury was removed on a
body board, wearing a
surgical collar, to the fire-
fighters’ boat and the injured
men were ferried to Deep
Cove and then driven to
Lions Gate Hospital.

They were identified by
Ports Canada Police as
Robin Walley aged 21, John
Whitbread, 24, and Jeff
Filtness, 23, of Vancouver.

Walley was later listed as

being in fair condition by

Lions Gate staff, who said
Whitbread had been
transferred to another
hospital and Filtness had
been discharged.

Van Guilder said that
after the injured had been
taken to hospital he and
others present attempted to
salvage the damaged boat.

“We spent the next two
and a half hours keeping it
afloat,” he said. “We took a
bunty off the harbors board
boat and took it to Cates
Park - and then it sank.

“We towed it up on shore
as far as possible and the
harbors board police said to
leave it there and the tide
went up and it sank.

“It was a shame. There
was a lot of hard work by
people to keep it afloat.”
