almost half. Boys table
tennis involvement
decreased from 136 to 62,
perhaps” reflecting the
waning of the 1970s table
tennis craze.

Other sports that have
seen a decline. are bad-
minton (both boys and girls),
boys wrestling, boys
swimming, boys track and
field (but only from 492 to
490) and tennis (both boys
and girls).

But these were more than
balanced out by the sports in’
which interest increased,
such as girls softball. Partic-
ipation in this sport more
than doubled in the five

players in 1975 to 13 teams
and 276 players in 1980.

Boys soccer also showed a
substantial rise in the
number of players, reflecting
the growing popularity of the
sport in North America. The
number of North Shore high
school players rose 67 per

hockey, curling (from 0 to 8

curlers), swimming,
basketball, skiing, table
tennis, cross country run-

ning (almost doubling in
numbers from 76 to 137),
and track and field.
