Lennon, 40, was shot five times as he walked - with his wife Yoko Ono from his limousine to the door of the Dakota, and exclusive Manhattan apartment building on Central Park West where the couple lived. Police arrested Mark David Chapman, 25, of Honolulu, Hawaii, and charged him with the slaying. A motive for the shooting was not im- mediately known. “IT just shot John Lennon,” witnesses quoted Chapman =§§ as saying after Lennon fell. Police, fearing for the suspect's safety, were keeping Chapman's whereabouts secret Tuesday morning, refusing to disclose when he was being held or processed. Loucks made the an- nouncement during his mid- term address at the inaugural meeting of council, an ad- dress dominated by a warn- ing of higher taxes facing Ci- ty residents. In his speech Loucks said that reaching a decision on the final route of the Low Level road was “another ma- jor task for this council.” Two options were available, he said, negotiating a route through the Squamish lands or using Third Street from Forbes Avenue to Bewicke Avenue as part of the Low Level road.
