community roundup ate callers tormenting the wrong address Please lay off Butts Giraud and his wife Joan! The well-known World Bellyflop and Cannonball Champion recently bought a new house in West Van- couver and took it over last week. With it he also took over a nasty headache. The house, at 770 An- dover Crescent, happens to be the address given last week for a man charged in provincial court with rape, abduction, indecent assault and assault causing bodily harm. The accused man n0 NV enrolment drops blamed on prices of housin By CAROLE STAFFORD Enroiment in North Vancouver schools dropped again this year and rising real estate prices are cited as the most likely reason, by school board officials. There are 788 fewer pupils in the system this year than last, according to figures in a report on enrolment and staffing presented to North Van school board last week. At the same time. maternity leaves of absence among teachers are in- creasing every year. “But I don't know where the kids are,” said assistant superintendent Donald McEown in presenting the report. “Probably what happens, is that when a couple decides to have a family, someone stops working and the family moves to Surrey or somewhere ~ The board granted 41 leaves for maternity reasons last year — about 40 per cent of the total. The iargest drop in enrolment occurred at the elementary level, with 389 fewer students than last year. Aijmost as many, 376, dropped from the secondary schools while at the kin- dergarten level, only 29 fewer pupils are enrolled this year. Superintendent of schools Rod Wickstrom said he suspects the high cost of housing in the district was causing families to move out. “And the families who move in, probably have no children or they have older children,” he said. Wickstrom said the same thing happened three years ago when the price of housing soared. “We could see it coming this spring when the same thing began to happen again,” he said. McEown said 32 fewer teachers had been hired this year owing to the decrease in enrolment. McEown pointed to the difficulty of maintaining the current level of program- ming in the schools and suggested, “Perhaps we're asking the schools to do more than we can expect.” Subject Place Date Time 7 30pm block 987-7131. The anonymous callers, said Giraud, threatened all kinds of things and sometimes came on every half hour or so. “They had very bitter voices,” he added, “and said things like, “You're going to pay for this.”” The accused man’s phone has now been disconnected and Giraud has his own, different number. But the continuing problem is that the address of his new home still remains in the phone book under the accused's name and will stay there until the new phone book comes out sometime in 1981.
