B2-Sunday News, June 29, 1980 sport & North Vancouver's Andy Mahood scored an im- pressive last lap victory over Surry’s Ross Bentley in a very hotly contested fifth round of the ICSCC Formula Ford Championship. Starting his Pentax Cameras/CKVU Lola from pole position, he fought a race long battle with the Akai sponsored Surrey driver that wasn’t decided until the last corner of the last lap. The two young drivers left the rest of the 29 car field well behind them from the first lap on. The bulk of the field was comprised of entries from Washington and éxchanged the lead 14 times during the course of the half hour race, constantly swapping positions as they swept down the 140 mph backstraight or dove into the 90 mph carousel turn at the end of pit straightaway. A hard charging Jon Landes from Auburn, Washington moved up from seventh position on the starting grid to third place by the sixth lap, but slowly dropped off the torrid pace of the front runners. A severe oil spill on the eighth lap made for very treacherous driving con- ditions for ali the cars, resulting in a large number of spin-outs and off road slipped by Bentley going down the backstraight, snatching the lead as they came out of the last hairpin corner. The crowd were on their feet as Bentley's car pitched sideways on the oily surface in a last ditch effort to retake the lead under hard braking, but Mahood came of the turn first and swept up the hill to the waiting chequered flag (sticking his hand in the air and waving goodbye to the stricken Bentley, who was spinning bis wheels in the dirt after dropping two wheels off the track). Mahood has now won manding lead in the 13 race series with a total of 86 pomts compared to 51 for second place driver Ed Freutel of Edmonds, Washington. Westwood’s next race wiil be a 3-hour Molyshp en- durance race and full CASC regional on July Sth and 6th. Marty Kooll, in his North Shore News/Minit Tune Formula Vee took third place ina Vee race.
