" people who exercise regular-
ly are subject to a severe
allergic reaction that could
be. life-threatening and
should never run or jog
alone, an expert in allergic
diseases said recently.

“Always take a buddy

along, ” was the advice of
Dr. Albert L. Sheffer,
associate clinical professor
at Harvard Medical School.

Sheffer, who also is direc-
tor of clinical allergy at
Peter Bent Hospital in
Boston, said the number of
exercise enthusiasts who suf-
fer allergic reactions from
increased physical activity is
larger than most people
believe.

He delivered a paper and
held a news conference on
the phenomenon at the 36th
annual meeting of the
American
Allergy. Some 1,700 physi-
cians and research scientists
specializing in allergic
diseases are attending the
meeting.

he reported on his ex-
periences with a group of 16
patients over a period of 10
years. He said the reasons
for the sometimes severe
allergic reactions to exer-
cises were not

Sheffer described the
reactions of itching of the
skin, Choking, headaches, a
feeling of warmth and, in
some cases, collapse.

“In no case has a con-
tinued exercise program,
even when associated with
the exercise induced allergy,
led to a serious medical il-
Iness, Sheffer said.

Athletes subject to severe
allergic reactions should be
treated with adrenalin as the
drug of choice and they
should not run or exercise
alone, he said.

“They should modify their
exercise program. If they are
exercising and begin to have
choking or trouble
breathing, they should im-
mediately stop exercising,”
Sheffer said.
