@ Canadian modernist painter jack Weldon Humphrey's
work will be on display July 17-31 at the Heffel Gallery in
Vancouver.
Born in New Brunswick in 1901, Humphrey studied at the
Ecole Grande Chaumiere in Paris and with Hans Hofmann
in Munich. His Matisse-like canvases — largely still life and
portrait \vork — are both colourful and densely textured.

Biack credits the AWA and its showcase
competitions with helping her along.

“I started off doing a six month program
at the Actor’s Workshop,” she says. “Two
months into it, I did my first contest, and
won first place. It wasn’t long after that I
signed on with an agent.”

Black says that the experience of per-
forming in the competitions in front of
industry decision-makers can be “a little
intimidating, t because you're consciuus of
trying to do your best. But (the agents and
casting directors) are just regular people —
you kind of forget that.”

“Before this I was an entrepreneur,” says
Black. “f soid knives. I was living in L.A.
and I just got really frustrased —— I didn’t
know whar to do with myself. Then I decid-
ed thar acting was what [ loved to do, and I

Now that she’s on the brink of on-screen
success, it looks like that career change may
just dc the best move Black has ever made.
