THE Windsor Dukes come-from-behind win over the Sentinel Spartans was still being talked about this week in high schoo} football circles. Longtime followers of the game contend that the Dukes 28-77 win last Saturday was the most excit- ing B.C. football tinal ever played at B.C, Place. However, an equally compelling stery was unfolding trom Sentinel's locker room, A tale of blood and guts. Spartan tailback Soroush Ansari helped to lead the West Vancouver school to the top of the double A heap this season as he ram bled for 1,385 and 21! touchdowns, Two years ago, however, the thought of Ansari just jogging 100 yards was a big question. On Oct. 5, 1995, the then-Grade 10 broke his leg in a game against Burnaby Centra. But his love of the game and an inner fortitude rare in many voung athletes kept lus dreant of playing senior football for die Spartans alive. First he had to contend with living with a los cast -- for eight months - fol lowed by avo months ina wheelchair “Efe came tome atthe end of the scasen chist vet and asked me what he had toda to be the best” recalled Sentinel head coach Dave Rusviki. Andrew McCredie view 5 from the cheap seats Hit the weightroom and ron track was coach's advice, and Soroush did both with a vengeance. “Pwork out in the weightroom, and the joke this past summer was that he was my son,” Ruzviki said of Ansari. “Hie followed me around the weightroom tor the whole summer.” The result? He inereased his bench press weight to 285 Ibs. And as to running track, Ansari improved from being at the back of the pack to the point where he finished third at the North Shore finals in the senior boys’ 100m competition, “Just hard work and per- severance,” Ruzviki said of his tailback’s return to form. The coach added that Ansari iad a good game against the Dukes, but Windsor’s defence kept his evplosive powcr in check. “The untortinate thing was thar the second: half ofthe Windsor suume we weren't able to throw as much.” Rugviki satd “And as a result of that they were Keving on Soroush” Soroush Ansart may have beonon the losing ude hast weekend when the final gan went, but there ts ne deny ing he is a winner. eee Despite a hi-tech approach to last weekend ’s B.C. double-A foorball championship game, Dave Rusvike’s Sendiel Spartans couldnt solve fay Prepchuk’s Windsor Dukes.
