1b'- Wednesday, Aptil 27, 1994 - Norlh Shore News Council heeding call for cultural facilities DESPITE THE relative affluence of the North Shore's population, the region's cultural facilities ate insuf- ficient and many need to he improved, a recent report presenti to North Vancouver City Council stated, NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL By Grace Golightly Commissioned by the North Shore Arts Commission, the Regional Cultural Facilities Study: Final Report, notes that 4 1993 study found a high percentage of North Shore residents attend cultural events (within a two-year period, 72% attended concerts, 60% attend- ed plays, 42% attended art galleries and 44% attended muscums) bul SS of the respondents prefersed to attend evens in Vancouver, where they felt the variety and quality of facilities was better, The report's recommendations include; @ renovations to Theatre; the development of a new photo and media art gallery; M@ the relocation of the North Vancouver Museum; Ma new 200- to 300-seat theatre. The bill for proposed facilities in North Vancouver alone could range from $9.9 million to $18 million. But the report was well-accepted by council, which voted unanimous- ly at its April 18 mecting to support it, Centennial Residential! for empty-nesters From page 3 Moors disputed SOS Again's argument that the donated park would be awkward and uncomfort- able for residents to use because of its proximity to the residential buildings. “You can look at other areas where that has been successful — False Creck, for example,” said Moors. — Moors said United Properties has conducted traffic studies on Doffarton Highway which indicate the road can handle the develop- ment. He said Cates Landing, similar to United’s Parkgate Manor recent- ly completed behind Parkgate Shopping Centre, is geared to “empty-nesters” who do not con- tribute heavily to rush-hour traffic. Moors said Parkgate Manor has 136 units and five children in the complex. He said Cates Landing would have a similar minimal impact on the school system. “We don’t anticipate a large ratio (of children) in this project,” said Moors. The NVD planning department recommended the project go ahead, but elected councillors have deferred the rezoning process until the fall. 7 DR. ALE.
