Greenhouse fire

A FIRE that started in a greenhouse caused $40,000
damuge at 523 E. 13th St. on Sunday. |

A North Vancouver City Fire Department spokesper-
son said there were no injuries. The spokesperson said an
elderly couple who live in the house were roused at 8
a.m. by a smoke alarm. The cause of the fire is still
under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.

Driving charge
A 17-YEAR-OLD West Vancouver youth faces a charge

of reckless driving. According to a West Vancouver
Police spokesperson, the youth drove through a group of

student:.at high speed.

Aboul 60 students were standing in front of Sentinel
secondary school Dec. 9, on the night of the school’s

Christmas dance.
No one was injured.

The youth was scheduled to appear in provincial court
in West Vancouver on Monday.

“We're kind of winding down,”
said Rod Nelson, spokesperson for
the coast guard, at noon Tuesday.
“We skimmed virtually all night.’”.

Nelson said the spill was of me-

said the boomed area was as clean
as it was going to get.

Nelson said marine diesel oil is
thinner than the bunker oil that
often. spills from ships. The
lighter.oil evaporates and spreads
more quickly than: bunker, oll. It’s

not. as sticky, but it is harder to
pick up because it is so thin!

“There wasn’t any: significant
accumulation .on the North
Shore,” said Ken. Wile, head of
the Emergencies Division of En-
vironment Canada.‘'The oil that is
remaining appears to be around
Stanley Park, from Lumberman’s
Arch to Prospect Point.”

Wile’s. chief concern is for the
sea birds that might be affected. A
wildlife rehabilitation centre has
been set up at the PNE grounds to
treat any endangered: birds.
Members of the public are re-
quested to ‘call 666-6100 to report
sightings.

“Up to this point, we have no
confirmed sightings of oiled
birds,’’ Wile said, adding that the
effects of marine diesel may take
fonger to manifest themselves.

He said it’s fortunate that there
were no major salmon runs in the
area at the time of the spill, but
the effects on fish in the area are
not yet known.

The bill for the oil clean-up will
be presented to its owners for
payment, Nelson said.

The ship is registered in Manila.
