Feeding birds
in wintertime

NOW THAT winter is’ fast ap-

proaching, birds . that do not
_ Migrate must search for. alternative
food sources because their usual

diet of seeds, berries, and insects .

is no longer available.

Many oirds depend on people to
feed them and supply them with
fresh water during this time of
year, .

In winter, you should never let
-a birdfeeder go empty — not even
for a day.

Once birds start flocking to
your feeder, they’ll depend on you
to keep it well stocked. It’s also a
good idea to put out some warm
water in a dark dish.

Although there are several types
of feeders on the market today,
you may prefer to make one
yourself,

A simple one that you can make
at home is a_pine-cone feeder:
wrap a piece of: string or yarn
around the top of a pine cone.

Coat the cone thoroughly with
suet or lard (you can also roll it in
birdseed to make a tasty mixture);

Tie the string to a high branch
or clothesline where cats and dogs
can’t reach it.

Remember to check the feeder
every two or three days to ensure
that it still has food in it.

You'll get hours of enjoyment
watching birds flock (o your
feeder on a crisp winter day —
just when you thought all wildlife
had disappeared until spring!
