Local theatre groups appeal to —
community in bid to save venue

“help. in their fight to save the
theatre at Presentation House.

West Van are encouraging anyone
who cares about preserving com-
_ munity theatre on the North Shore
to join Presentation House Cultur-
val, Society, the non-profit group
that oversees the city-owned arts
facility.

The cultural society’s five-year
strategic plan for the arts facility,
for example, makes provisions for
developing a world-class photo
gallery but does not include a
long-term vision fur the theatre.

"The current board is interest-
ed: in high-profile exhibitions and
our feeling is Presentation House
should be a community cultural
centre — the society, after all, was
originally formed as a community
cultural society,’’ said Strachan.

expensive to maintain and that the
natural conclusion would be to
tear it down and build a high-
profile gallery. Fine. But we
believe we shouldn’t lose the cul-
tural centre. The reason it's (the
theatre) not working is because
the board is not interested in
theatre.”’

Jenkins, meanwhile, said that if
the current board refuses to allow
theatre people on to the execu-
tive, she and others may go to the
City of North Vancouver and
make the case that the centre is
not being used as it was originally
intended ~— as a community: arts
centre,
