North Vancouver resident Ron Kraushaar has been breeding German shepherds for 28 years, although his main interests lie in the areas of dog behavior and dog genetics. But he said he enjoys breeding German shepherds. One of his dogs, Rocky, is cur- rently working with the West Vancouver Police Department’s dog squad. A second dog, Razz, was recently sold by the West Vancouver Police to a _ police department in Nelson. “Sometimes they (police) come to me and ask if | have any good dogs. The police look for a trail blazer. Bold, curious puppies are the ones they want,’’ said Kraushaar. . He added that he conducts sev- eral tests with his pups to deter- mine if they would be suitable for police work: @ stress tests; @ aggression tests; @ competitive spirit tests; @ fetch tests; @ prey-drive tests, in. which the pup chases after things running away from him; © sociability tests. **You want the ones that will go and investigate. The violence in dogs is a genetic thing. ‘“*A& German shepherd can be a potentially dangerous dog. It’s very important to breed a dog that has a strong nervous system,’’ said Kraushaar. He added that the basic charac- ter of a German shepherd is to protect. Kraushaar imports all of his dogs from Germany. He gives away most of the dogs he breeds. “*I only ask people to be kind to it and love it but also to discipline it. After that, the puppy just has to survive.
