Granville Island has come a long way since beaver,
muskrat and ducks splashed in the swampy waters
of False Creek over a century and a half ago.

In the 1920’s there wasn’t a vacant site to be found
at Granville Island. Some of Vancouver’s largest
manufacturing plants settled here, churning out
rope, textiles, boilers, barrels and drums. In the
Second World War Granville Island drastically
increased its’ pace.

By the 1960’s Granville Island took a decline. The
Island, once the industrial heart of the city, now
rested on the verge of ruin.

In 1972, the government sponsored the
redevelopment of Granville Island as part of the
overall renaissance of the False Creek area.
