Making up for lost time IT WAS 20 years ago that the federal private member’s bill to designate a national Environment Week was given royal assent. In 1972 the United Nations declared June 5 World Environ- ment Day, and the Canadian En- vironment Week was wrapped around that date. It’s only been in the past few years, however, that thes» proc- lamations have been give: much attention. But to judge from the number of eco-events planned for next week, we're making up for lost time. The following are just a few of the green celebrations and activi- ties in which to participate. You'll be able to spend all week in the Lynn Canyon Ecology Cen- tre and still not run out of things to do. On Saturday, tomorrow, bring all your organic gardening and natural pest management ques- tions to a free, 2 p.m. lecture with Martin “Harcourt of Mainland Landscaping and Gardening. You are invited to bring sam- ples of you garden pests or of the devastation they have wrought upon your plants for identifica- tion. John Morton of Wild Birds Un- limited will tell you how to attract a variety of birds to your backyard on Sunday, June 2 at 2 p.m. (free). Go on a bug safari on Monday, June 3 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $1: pre-register by calling the ecology centre at 987-5922. Make hanging baskets for hummingbirds from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Cost is $2; pre-registration is required. If you haven’t already, that’s the time to explore alternatives to driving your car to work. Walk, bus, bike, carpool... and = en- courage your friends to do the same.
