Artist nominated for Order of B.C. WEST VANCOUVER portrait painter Unity Bainbridge has been nominated for the Order of B.C. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter Bainbridge, a native of Victoria who painted B.C. and its peoples for more than 60 years, was nominated by friend Jane Clark “simply because this woman has an extraordinary background and is practically unknown.” Clark said Bainbridge’s con- tribution as a historical painter was the basis on which she made her nomination. ‘‘! really believe that she should receive this award because she was working out in the field painting B.C. landscapes at a time when the only other per- son doing the same thing was Emnily Carr. “This is a very courageous woman. It was unheard of in those days (the °20s and ’30s) for a young woman to go by herself into villages where no English was spoken, She went to Lillooet, Bella Belia — only she and Emily Carr were doing that.’’ Bainbridge’s painting career began in the ‘20s and flourished during the °30s, "40s and °50s. During those years she recorded many historical B.C. scenes, such as a group of Japanese at work at a fish canning plant in West Van- couver during the "30s, and many well-known native leaders: Squamish nation chief Joe Mathias, Chief Black Joe, and Galen Weston. Today her work hangs in the Diefenbacher Museum in Saskat- chewan, Canada House in London and Buckingham Palace, to name just a few, But most of her work she kept for herself and her family, said Clark. “‘And she's lived a very meager life because of that.”* Today at 75, Bainbridge re- mains an active painter. ‘‘She’s the sort of woman who, even to- day, would go and sleep in a car in order to capture an image,” said Clark, LAMB & RICE.
