SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Baha'is celebrate new year BAHA'IS AROUND around the North Shore and around the world celebrated their New Year’s Day on Thursday, March 21. New Year’s Day, or Naw-Ruz, follows 19 days during which Baha'is abstain from all food and drink between the hours of sunrise and sunset. “It’s supposed to be a time of prayer, fasting and good deeds,”’ says focal Baha’i Sandra MacLeod. ‘It’s a break from the normal routine that gives us the time to stop and . re-think our purpose in life.” The Baha’i year consists of 19 months of 19 days each. The months are named after an at- tribute of God, such as Glory, Beauty, Perfection, Justice and Mercy. On March 21, Baha’is entered the month of Splendor and the year 148 B.E. — or ‘*Baha’i Era,” referring to the inception of ‘By Peggy Trendell-Whittaker News Reporter the religion in Persia in 1844. Each North Shore municipality — North Vancouver District, North Vancouver City and West Vancouver District — has a Baha’i assembly, or administrative body, consisting of nine people. All told, MacLeod estimates that there are hundreds of Baha'is on the North Shore. Members of the Baha’i faith meet at the beginning of each 19-day month for a ‘‘Feast’’ that includes prayers, socializing and consultation on current issues within the organization. People interested in learning more about the religion are invited to informal ‘tinformation”’’ gath- erings that are held at the home of local members. The next is on Sunday, March 3) at 8 p.m.; call 985-6833 for information about the location. Founded by Baha'u'llah, whoze name means ‘‘The Glory of God,’* the Baha'i faith teaches the oneness of God, the oneness of religion and the oneness of mankind. While Baha’u’llah is the lates? manifestation of God, says MacLeod, Baha’is believe in all the other prophets that preceded him, such as Abraham, Buddha, Krishna and Christ. Baha’is, she says, are encourag- ed to read other religions’ holy books, such as the Bible and the Koran, as well as the Baha’i holy writings.
