North Vancouver BC. 985-2501 funeral infuriates reader Dear Editor: On reading Doug Collins’ col- umn in the Feb. 24 paper I am furious about the way Horace Clarke's funeral was treated by his church. Too bad this was a year- old story never brought to light till now. I knew ‘‘old’’? Horace Clarke rather well through his being a member of the seniors’ centre for years. He was one of my friends and one | missed when he no longer could attend trips and func- tions at the centre. On reading Mr. Collins’ column about the fuss over what a pall- bearer shouid or could wear (uniform and medals) for a veteran who had fought to preserve this country’s freedom, I find it outra- geous. What sort of Christians were these anti-military type of church members? If it had not been for such men as Horace, none of us would have had a church to go to, be free to worship as we chose, let alone dress as we wish. Good for you, John Struthers, for trying to do what should have been allowed, and to you, Doug Collins, for the story. I’m glad I belong to a church that — so far -— does not hold the views of the Anglican one and where we can remember what our veterans did to allow us the freedom of thought and actions that we have in our glorious country, Grace Schell West Vancouver Helicopter noise ruining LS oi" 988-6321} Kenneth J- Baxter 310 - 145 Chadwick Court, North Vancouver Gust south of the market — next to the Seabus) Lonsdale Quay Plaza quiet of the Dear Editor: Vancouver has been unique in having a beautiful mountain wilderness, the North Shore mountains, a recreational greenbelt, right on its doorstep. From the early days Vancouver’s citizens wandered, hiked, climbed and skiied these mountains. They en- joyed the ‘‘recreat(e)ional’’ nature of the area, in the original sense of the word ‘‘recreate,’’ namely to create anew, to restore the body and mind through fresh air, outdoor exercise. Most important of ali, they experienced the quiet of nature, escaped the mechanized acoustical chaos, the noise and frenzy of the city. Now, however, the peace and quiet of a large part of these mountains, the Grouse, Black mountain, Lions peaks triangle (including Cypress Provincial Park) is on fine weekends a thing of the past. Sightseeing helicopters operating out of the upper gondola terminal on Grouse Mountain clatter noisily wilderness at low level over the area in constant 15 minute tours. This noisiest aerial vehicle shatters the silence of nature. It intrudes into the wilderness the mechanized noisy frenzy of the urban world, that very world we need to seek respite from in order to “‘recreate’’ ourselves. The helicopter may be useful for quick business travel, and for construction, and mining away from roads and airports. Its intrusion into the wilderness as sightseeing vehicle is completely destructive of tnat very basic quality of mature we seek in wilderness, “peace and quiet.’' It is high time for the federal government to in- stitute aircraft noise abatement measures. It is hoped provincial and municipal governments, concerned groups and citizens will maintain pressure on it until it loes. It was also stated that the final design for Westview would be completed later this year. Angus Ree said that both over- passes are vital to the fall-1991 opening of the Cassiar Connector. I have a question for Mr. Ree. If the Lonsdale overpass will take 2% years, as it will, and the Westview overpass will not even have plans until later in 1989, then how will the ‘vital’ Westview link in the grand Lower Mainland highway scheme be ready by the fall of 19917 I will answer the question for him. It won't be ready. Jeremy Dalton North Vancouver we NOW CARRY ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Low, low prices on blinds and tracks For FREE Estimates Call 987-2966 Serving the North Shore for 18 years.
