eader child-care ad Dear Editor: Has the North Shore News no commitment to truth in advertis- ing? A recent paid article on child care contained a number of impor- tant omissions, several inac- curacies, and at least two misrep- resentations. Omitted: the fact that the pro- posed Child Care Strategy would give tax relief only to employed parents who can find licensed day-care and can afford to pay $2,000 to $4,000 a year for it. One prominent critic referred to ‘‘token tax credits for poor parents and generous tax deductions for rich ones.”" Omitted: the fact that the gov- ernment proposal to create new child-care spaces will be im- plemented over seven years. (The children who need the spaces will be in school by then!) Omitted: the fact that the cre- ation of new child-care spaces is dependent on provincial decisions. Premier Vander Zalm could con- ceivably use all shared grants for parent subsidies, without ensuring a single new space. Misrepresented: the ad speaks of “new licenced (sic) child-care spaces,’’ but the government’s own estimates suggest child-care spaces will actually be fimited to the pres- ent rate of increase or less, Seriously Misrepresented: the New Democratic Party’s child-care policy, which is aimed at giving parents CHOICES about the kind of care they wish for their children. ‘‘The New Democratic Party supports a multi-faceted system to meet the varicty of needs Dear Editor: It is necessary to write to you to let you, and the residents of North Vancouver, know what a wonder- ful group of professionals work in the Palliative Care Unit at Lions Gate Hospital. My mother, Cleta Kannon, bat- tled with cancer for the last five years, and recently passed atvay in LGH. During our five year fight with cancer, we needed to call upon the the PCU staff numerous times. We were extremely fortu- nate 10 receive outstanding home care, and phenomenal hospital care. The nurses, volunteers and Susan Hogman (social worker), in our eyes, are close to sainthood. This very special breed of profes- sionals helped us in so many ways — too numerous to account for. In gencral, all of our needs, medical, emoticnal and religious were always first and foremost in the PCU staff's minds. There isn’t one staff member who did not perform her job with utmost compassion, efficiency, expediency and trust. The North Shore is very fortu- nate to have such exceptional ser- vices for the terminally ill, and my mother and my family are grateful to have been in touch with them.
