CHINESE ARTISTS ragon boats Pe shown at centre DRAGON BOATS, an exhibition of traditional Chinese painting by young students at Vancouver's Chinese Cultural Centre opens Ju- ly 15 in the Children's Gallery. The exhibition, organized by The Vancouver Art Gailery in col- laboration with the Vancouver Chinese Cultural Centre, celebrates the ancient Dragon Boat Festival, an annual event in Asia, dating from the 4th century B.C. More than 25 watercolors by students ranging from age six to sixteen, will be on display through September 15. The young artists are members of classes conducted by the cen- tre’s Chew Jack Woo, who teaches students traditional Chinese paint- ing and folk art techniques, com- bined with some instruction on the practise of writing Chinese charac- ters to develop adeptness with the brush. CONFUCIAN IDEAS There is also an accent on copy- ing, as a learning device, with respect for the transmission of knowledge from teacher to stu- dent. These practices are part of Con- fucian attitudes and are traditions which are still kept alive in Chinese communities. The theme of this exhibition has been inspired by the Dragon Boat Festival races held June 14 and 15 at False Creek, as part of the Van- couver Centennial celebrations. The Dragon Boat Festival, cele- brated annually in Asia, had its beginnings in 4th century B.C, and commemorates the death of a leg- endary poet and statesman who was forced from office and exiled by a corrupt government. In protest, he jumped into the river and drowned. His body was never found although local fishermen searched for him, beating the water with their oars and sounding drums and gongs to scare off the dragons and fish that would prey on his re- mains. Rice dumplings, wrapped in silk, were thrown into the water as an offering to his spirit. His poetry is still read today and reflects his personal lamentation and love for his country. The dragon boats are symbolic of this historic event. DRAGON AWAKES For eleven months of the year the boats lie dormant, the dragon god having been sent to heaven at the end of each festival. However, one month prior to the festival, a ritual to awaken the dragon is performed. Boats are brought out from storage, cleaned and the eyes of the dragon are dotted to symbolize its rebirth. The Dragon Boat Festival, held on the fifth day of the fifth moon INTERDENOMINATIONAL SINGLES BIBLE CLASS at the Pantry Restaurant 112 West 13th Street North Vancouver Sunday 9:00am-11:00am All Singles Welcome “Let's Talk It Over” Practical Subjects and Discussion For Information Cal! 980-3064 in the Chinese Lunar calendar, is one of the three days in the year when all debts must be settled and homage is paid to ancestors.
