Equally important, according to
the research council, is the need
for the sprinkler to discharge a
sufficient quantity of water in the
right spray pattern to control a
fire.

The deflector of the residential
sprinkler is designed to ensure that
a greater quantity of water is
sprayed higher on the perimeter
walls to prevent fire spread over
the upper walls and ceilings.

This is needed because of the
combustible nature of many types
of interior wall and ceiling
finishes.

The pressure and flow require-
ments of the sprinklers are also
critical.

FAST ACTION

The rapid action of the specially
designed sprinklers means that
firefighters are confronted with
less severe fires and it might also
be possible to increase the response
time limits for individual fire sta-
tions.

In fact, in some U.S. jurisdic-
tions, the number of fire stations
was actually reduced when residen-
tial sprinklers were made man-
datory.

In remote communities with
minimal public water supplies, res-
idential sprinkler systems with
self-contained water supplies may
be the most practical means of fire
control,

The NRCC suggests that it is
probable that the costs of residen-
tial sprinkler installations can be
recovered through tax incentives
and building code trade-offs.

Insurance Bureau of Canada
(IBC) also points out that smoke
causes the majority of fire-related
deaths while hot flames are low on
the list of killers.
