INSPECT EXTERIOR OF HOME Damp basement can ARE YOU bothered with leaks of seepage through your basement wall or floors? If so, both problems can be solved. However, they are not the easiest jobs in the world and some- times finding the solution can be a long and frustrating process. THE OBVIOUS PROBLEM The first thing to do is to look outside the leaking wall and see if there is an obvious reason for the leak. Does a sidewalk or driveway slope down toward the house wall? Is there a downspout in the im- mediate area that is channelling water toward the leaking spot? is there a slope to the backyard that invites water to rest up against the house? These are all situations that can cause water to find its way into your basement. Incidentally, water has a strange way of finding an opening — sometimes yards away from what would seem to be the other pro- blem spot. In other words, if the walk slopes in toward your house three yards up from your basement do not discount that as the cause of the problem. The first step is to closely inspect the exterior of the house and cor- rect all of the above-mentioned situations when they appear. EXTERIOR COATING Another thing to look for is ex- terior waterproofing on the base- ment walls. This black, tar-like coating should extend up the wall well above the ground level. If this is not the case, water can seep into the concrete or block and seep down to enter the house at a lower level. This material is not expensive and is easy to apply but the tough part is to dig away the soil from the house wall in order to apply a new coating. If all the exterior problems seem to be fixed you can look inside. This may be the most difficult problem to fix. You may want to re-cover the basement walls. There are many cement-like wall coatings on the market. These products will prevent minor seep- age but will be of no value if there are cracks or holes in your base- ment walls. Often these cracks do not appear until several years after the house is built and are usually due to settl- ing of the structure rather than poor workmanship. If you have a large crack in the wall the first thing to do is to enlarge it. That's right enlarge it! Undercut the edges of the crack so that the patching compound OPEN SUNDAYS 10:00-5:00 [DRIVEWAY EALER 4m F SEALER For a newer, cteaner- looking driveway Easy to apply {Windsor's | Be CORONATION PAINT intenorExtenor acryhe latex 88 LITRES 4'6"x8’ high wide Pestect tor cementing in fence posts Windsor Plywood and Building Supplies e you use will have something to cl- ing to. DEALER ADVICE Your local hardware dealer will be able to advise you on which product will best fil! the bill for your problem. These renovations can be of a functional nature, such as new kitchen cupboards, new floors, or new plumbing and _ electrical systems, They can also be exotic, such as hot tubs, skylights, or even indoor atriums. They can also be expen- sive. Prudent homeowners insure their building and its contents for replacement cost. This means, that in the event of a claim, a damaged article would be replaced with a brand new article, and the owner would not be charged any depreciation. But care must be taken to ensure that the amount of insurance which you carry on your buildings and contents is truly representative of their actual replacement cost. Sometimes, when extensive renovations are conducted, the value of the house increases dramatically, without the home- owner making similar adjustments to the amount of house insurance that is carried. This neglect leads to underin- surance, and can cause severe fi- nancial loss in the event of a serious claim. Poona ee Quality™'s\2" Cabinetwoods IN STOCK — OAK. ASH. KNOTTY PINE, BIRCH.
