BUILDING a karat goid
jewellery coilection is quite
simple once you know the

karat (K) mark. Marked as
14K or 18K, this signifies the
purity of the gold. Pure gold
is 24K, but this is generally
too soft for jewellery mak-
ing. Gold is therefore
alloyed with other metals for
added strength. Consequent-
ly, 14K is 14 parts gold mix-
ed with 10° parts other
metals, and so on.

The hallmark —~ a tiny
symbol that indicates where

the piece was made and by
whom — is the next sizn of
quality jewellery. Generally
found beside the karat mark,
this mark is registered with
the Canadian Jewellery
Association.
