“There seems to be some stability in the situation,” co- ordinator John Hegeman told the News Wednesday, after his group had handed: . out food to about 150:people. “‘That’s down alittle.from ~ last week when, we had.200, but next week: we'll: ‘probably - get a few ‘more ‘(than - the © 150),’’ Hegeman says.’ That cycle, ; numbers varying between 150 and 200, represents a levelling-off of demand. - “That's a good thing in a way. It indicates. that the crisis isn*t® ‘getting any worse,”’ he says. Hegeman and his volunteers move into thé North Shore Neighborhood House every Wednesday: at noon. They spend thé ‘next . hour setting up and-then open the doors to those who need the food at 1 p.m. Most days the rush is- over half an hour later.
