At least 2,300 traps are now in place to lure males of the species which may be Present, in an _ intense monitoring to check whether the pest, considered a major threat to trees, is established in the area. By far the most concen- trated trapping program is centred on the 3000 block Capilano Road, where last year a single trap caught three male gypsy moths. Some 2,000 traps have been placed there within an area of a half-mile square. Other key locations are in the Dollarton area, where traps also showed gypsy moths present last year. Gypsy moth caterpillars devour leaves of deciduous trees at an alarming rate and are responsible for millions of acres of destroyed forest AS - Sunday, June 19, 1983 - North Shore News Ready for the moths CHRIS LLOYD in eastern Canada and the U.S. Though they have stopped eating by the time they reach the moth stage, this is the only time they can be ac- curately monitored. Traps containing scented sex attractants similar to that given off by the female of the Species are placed to lure male moths. The number of male moths caught will determine the extent of the presence of the species. In the event of threat of in- festauon the question of chemical spraying will have to be decided by May next year, when caterpillars will be hatching from eggs laid at this present ime. Such a= situation would likely spark a battle with en- vironmentalists on the lines of the opposition in Kitsilano when spraying was carried out in 1979. The chemical favored by Agnculture Canada is car- baryl, manufactured under the brand name Sevin. Though it is hnked with birth defects and cancer, agriculture officials are EAION'S EATON’ HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES skeptical over the effec- tiveness of orgamic methods currently being used in Washington State to combat the pest. They say that any eradica- ton must be totally effec- tive, because of the pro liferation of the moth, which if established could affect the certificanon of lumber exported from Lynnterm and other terminals. A single female gypsy moth can lay up to 1,000 eggs within its one-week life cycle. Despite many calls from North Shore residents alerted by publicity of the threat, Agriculture Canada have not located any egg masses here this year. Program coordinator John Gold says the last traps were set on the North Shore within the past week, in a program which has been car- ried out with the aid of stu- dent workers and the cooperation of many local residents who now have traps located on their pro- perties. If there are gypsy moths in the areas, he expects the uraps will be showing the level of the problem by the last week in June.
