ADVICE FROM YOUR GOVERNMENT When I have a question about any aspect of travel, I try to get some input from someone directly involved with the mechanics of the things. Therefore, I called our M.P., Chuck Cook’s office and asked: “What can our government do to help us with any jams that we get into while out of Canada?” The reply that I received wasn't entirely what [d asked for — more like the summary of “Dos and Don'ts for Canadians Abroad” but the information is valuable and bears repeating. My own experience with Canadian offices abroad hasn't been all that swift. Once, fearing a _ military coup in Argentina, I tried to contact our Embassy. Some fun. When I finally got someone on the line I suspect she was part of the cleaning staff. The best my Spanish will do for me is to order two enchiladas. Stalemate. Sure enough, there was a coup — but my mother, my daughter and 1 were 100 miles out ts sea _ before anything happened in Buenos Aires. Nice timing. So, Chuck Cook is taking over as the trivel columnist for today. Hupe he doesn't = trayel- wise Barba ra McCreadie want to switch jobs with me! CHUCK COOK’S REPLY “You are leaving Canada and going to a foreign country. Your visit may be short or it may be extended. In either case, remember that you are subject to the laws of that country and make sure your conduct is circumspect and lawful. If it is not, you may end up in ‘with the casy manner of crossing our border to the United States. That is an exception. Make sure you have your passport and whatever visas may be required for your ination “For a Canadian, a valid Passport is essential for travel abroad. The passport, issued by the Department of External Affairs, represents to all foreign governments that the bearer is a Canadian citizen and is to be received accordingly. “On your travels guard your passport well. Know where your passport is at all times. If you lose, it, you are presumed to be a stateless — even an undesirable in- dividual — until the contrary is proven. You will be stranded without your passport until the nearest Canadian Consulate’ can furnish you with new documents. “Every country you visit has the right to set entry requirements, limit duration of your stay, and if necessary deny your ad- mission. To avoid possible detention or delays on arrival in a country, consult with the Embassy or Con- sulate of the country con- cerned about visas, entry or exit permits, health cer- tificates, and other possible requirements before you leave Canada. “Through birth, ethnic ongin, or marriage you may be regarded by a foreign country as one of their citizens even though under Candian law you are a Canadian citizen. “During a visit to a foreign Stalking the elusive dinosaur BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) - The key to the mystery surrounding the disap- pearance of the dinosaur and other species from the face of the earth 65 million years ago may lie on the bottom of the Caribbean, a news report said. The report, published in the May 21 issue of Science magazine, directly relates the extinction of certain species with the bom- bardment of the Earth by meteorites and other celestial bodies. The evidence, dependently reported by scientists in Berkeley and New Jersey. links the ex- tinction of five species of plankton called radiolana, to meteors that struck 354 million years ago. The evidence is described in the magazine in two reports on an unusually rich layer of the rare element iridium from deep-sea sediment cores pulled from the Caribbean. The iridium is microtektites, believed to be the cooled remnants of molten rock sprayed out- ward by large meteor im- pacts. “It is difficult to avoid the implicauon major meteorite impacts have played a role in the evolution of life on Barth.” said chemist R.
