(Terry Peters photo) # ed to modern society TOKYO (UPI) - -Japan’s highly competitive industrial society with its emphasis on success is blamed for a massive increase in sexual impotence among young men, the Kyodo news service reported recently. Japanese doctors are calling for special centers to deal with sexual inadequacy and ai = 150-member_ im- potence research society has recently established to study the problem, Kyodo said. The research society, composed of urologists, gynecologists and psycholo- gists. believes the increases in impotence among men in their 20s and 30s 1s directly linked to Japan's highly competitive society and (he pressure it places on them to succeed One doctor was quoted as saying he dealt with five to 10 cases of impotence a year in the 1950s, but now sees 150-180 cases annually. He said nearly 70 per cent of cases are young men in their 20s and 30s, the age when they would normally be in their sexual prime. Nearly 30 per cent had no other physical problems, indicating their impotence was psychological, he said. Doctors at a Tokyo university said nearly 50 per cent of some 320 cases of impotence treated in the past (wo years were psyco- logical in nature. They noted 30 per cent were primary, or “honcy- moon,” impotence cases involving young men facing their first sexual cx- periences “The so-called examination hell (intensive preparation necessary to enter Japanese universities) and the pressure on young men to study, plus the lack of adequate sex education, hardly prepares them to stand on their own,” one doctor said. A study of 100 cases of honeymoon impotence showed an unusuaily high percentage of eldest sons, youngest sons and only sons suffered from the problem. In the Japanese social system they would be most likely to receive heavy parental pressure. Secondary impotence, a type occurring in later life, was also on the upswing. especially among men under stress in their yobs or having problems with their wives, a doctor told Kyodo The doctor said that often these men were too busy or too embarrassed to seck treatment and the full extent of thetr) prblem- was unknown Gifts for imbibers HERE'S A gift idea for that special wine lover or wine maker oon your Christmas hist a ticket to one of the three special January wine events sponsored by the UBC Centre tor Continuing Kducation (or Ockets to all three’) The 3 lecture Current Irends from California (January 15). gives the latest news from the place where new trends begin $5.50 A componcnt testing workshop -— Sensory Evaluation of Wines (Saturday morning January 16) — will help refine the ability to recognize vanous flavour Components of wine -- $27 A special Wine Makers Clinic (Saturday afternoon January 16) 1s for serous wine makers who want to solve problems and make better wines - $44 Leaders of the events are (wo authorities from Cahfornia Jed Steele, an award winning wine maker and Ralph Kunkec. professor of cnology at the Viniversity oof Cahtorniag Davis This ts ao unique opportunity to update knowledge and = sharpen skills For further information call 228 2178) local 273 She will call and ask you to become a voluntary subscriber to the NEWS.
