SERVICE AVAILABLE IN WV Customers amazed at 3-D photographs CUSTCMERS HAVE been tempted to walk into the new 3-D portraits that have become available at David Choo Studios in West Vancouver. At the very feast, they’ll see if an inquisitive finger will sink into the apparent depths of the picture, or turn the snapshot sideways to check its width. “One lady told me she felt as if she belonged in the picture and wanted to walk in,” says David Choo, a West Vancouver photographer who recently began to make 3-D photos as part of his bag of tricks which includes special effects with double exposure and restoration of antique photos to modern clarity. Three-dimensional imagery has fascinated people for many years, but it was only recently and after a lot of experimentation that success wasachieved. The camera that does it is sur- prisingly small, but creates the il- lusion of depth with four ienses, in the same way that a person does with his own two eyes. Much of the skill rests with the photographer, who, rather then focusing, works with three dif- ferent exposure settings. “You have to know where to put your subject,”’ explains Choo. Usually someone faced with photographing a group of people with mountains in the backgorund and an artistically bent tree branch in the foreground would have to cheose what would be clear and consign the rest to a blur. Js your deposit insured? YOU’RE DEFOSITING your ‘nard-earned money in a financial institution, and you want to make sure it’s protected by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC). How can you find out? First, make sure the institution is a member of CDIC — members include banks, trust companies and loan companies. You cr:. easily identify CDIC members, they're required to display a membership sign. Once you’ve determined if your financial institution is a member of CDIC, the next step is to find out if your investment is insurable. CDIC insures savings and chequ- ing accounts, term deposits, guar- anteed investinent certificates, debentures (other than bank debentures), drafts, certified drafts or cheques, traveller’s cheques issued by members and money orders. For that reason, outdoor portraits can be very effective,’’ says Choo. The remainder of the skill in producing these arresting pictures rests with the devetopers and the processing, which takes place in just one place in North America — a Nevada laboratory. There, computerized printers optically slice each negative (with the four images created by each lens) into tiny strips less than 1/ 1,000°° wide. The strips are then realigned to form the surface of the photograph which produces the 3-D effect from any angle of observation. “Te’?s not the same as a hologram, which can only be ap- preciated from a certain angle,’’ Choo points out. This effect, once possible only by wearing funny glasses in a theatre, can now be made part of a couple’s wedding portrait package. Choo recently photographed the wedding of a member of the Hell’s Angels who chose io have a 3-D portrait taken of his best friends and himself on their Harley Davidsons.
