, Hiartin erchip THIS one was a pretty obvious cali, wasn’t it! And it’s about time something was done. Richard Kinar is hoping you will join him Nov. 2 in a telephone blitz of your local MLA’s constituency office and Victoria office as well as the Ministry of Finance. Some MPs like Ted Nebbeling are already looking forward to the calls. We doubt the finance gnomes (who are saying its not their responsibility) will be quite so pleased. In case you missed the story, Kinar helped to raise $30,000 for playground equipment at Caulfeild ele- mentary school. He was astonished when he learned the provincial government would take $2,100 off the top. Kinar points out that once that money is in the general revenue pot there is no way to tell where it might be spent — fast ferries or the salary of the bureaucrat that did the math? Who knows? According to Education minister Paul Ramsey, consumable school supplies such as chalk and pencils are exempt from tax because they wear out and must be replaced. Treras that might last the life of the school such as chalkboards and desks are subject te tax. Add Mr. Ramsey to the list for a phone call. He seems to be miss- ing the point. Parents chose to give extra money to a state school, not the state. inquiring reporter NORTH SHORE BEMOGRAPHICS '_ Horseshoe Ba Dundarave/Ambleside YES 0% ‘1 NO opinion RROW 93% 2% 5% 4% 8% Heather Stelmack North Vancouver No. The cost of education is so exorbitant and high now.
