Panna Two years ago, I would have given his West Vancouver restaurant six months maximum before going the way of its many hopping dining predecessors in the off Dundarave locale. But here we are fast head- ing into the new millennium and Mirabelle remains. Better than that it has improved with age. Its opening performance was less than impressive, as chronicled in distant Table Hopping installment No. 575 Suftering perhaps from the ghosts of restaurants past in its Marine Drive location, it registered several degrees below full boil excitement. Vaneouy Bur a recent Friday night visit found Ben Mirabelli’s house of middle-of-the-road Italian cuisine in far better form. The Mirabelle’s large Roman-style dining room, with its masculine pillars trimmed in terra cotta and rose tones, remains 2 low-key affair with an ambience on the under: side of subdued. But the food is much improved. Mirabelli has pared his menu down to a simple two- page selection of pasta ($11.50 co $13) and main entrees ($14 to $19) pref- aced by a half dozen basic appetizers ($4.50 to $7.50). The eight pastas, repre- senting the lighter end of the Mirabelle menu, range from Penne all’Arrabbiata to Fettuccine Capriccio. There is nothing particu- larly ambitious here, just a stable of familiar well-made selections. = The entrees, meanwhile, focus on more substantial fare for West Vancouver’s ardent carnivores: lamb chops, veal, steak, filer mignon, veal kidneys and calfs liver prevail. A pair of seafood entrees and a lone Chicken Venezia fill out the selection. Mirabelle’s wine list ($25 to $100) focuses on Iralian |. bottles, with some good selections available. But, alas, only a house red and wi hite, neither of which ©; is very good, are available by the glass. On the plate, there is much more to applaud. - See Eatery page 27 °. i Special This Week Broiled Halibut Chicken Sauté with Spring Vegetables Schnitzel, St. Moritz Style Rosemary Roast Lamb Calves Liver, glazed onions $11.95 $10.95 $10.95 $11.95 $9.95 Roast Prime Rib Thursday, Friday and Saturday night
